ANDREW KARP

Andrew Karp, President, Sierra Information ServicesAndrew Karp is Principal Consultant at Sierra Information Services, an independent SAS® Software consultancy. Prior to starting Sierra in 1994 he held positions with among others, Federal Express Corporation, PriceWaterhouseCoopers, Pacific Gas & Electric Company, and Kaiser Foundation Health Plan. He is a SAS Certified Professional™.

Andrew’s last professional role prior to starting Sierra was as manager of the Quality of Service Evaluation program at PG&E, where he was responsible for measurement of residential customer satisfaction at the largest investor-owned public utility in the United States. His responsibilities included sampling over 250,000 customers a year to receive the survey instrument, acquisition and management of data from returned surveys, and reporting the survey’s results throughout the corporation.

Since starting Sierra he has worked on consulting projects at the Sacramento Municipal Utilities District, Wells Fargo Bank, Blue Shield of California, Fireman’s Fund Insurance, Chordiant Software, IBM's Storage Systems Division, Lloyd's Bank/TSB, Limited Brands, Bear Creek Corporation, the American Board of Emergency Medicine and other organizations. These projects focused on using SAS software tools for data mining, predictive modeling, and decision support, as well as on customer satisfaction measurement, forecasting and reporting.

In addition to his consulting activities, Andrew regularly presents both public training seminars and customized on-site courses on various aspects of the SAS System.

He has designed and implemented customized training solutions for, among others, the US Import Administration, Capital One Financial Services, Inc., IBM, Lloyd's Bank/TSB in the United Kingdom, Discover Financial Services, Inc., the Health Insurance Commission of Australia, West Asset Management (formerly Omnium Worldwide), the Social Policy Agency of New Zealand, the Washington State Dept. of Health and Social Services, GE Capital Finance of Australia and New Zealand, the Office of the Chief Statistician of The Scottish Executive, the US Federal Communications Commission, the Maryland Department of Natural Resources, First Premier Bank, PayPal, Aetna, TXU Energy, and the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Andrew has presented public training seminars throughout the United States, as well as in the People’s Republic of China, England, Belgium, Australia and New Zealand. He has served on the technical review teams for seven books published by SAS Institute's Publications Division, including texts on statistical modeling, programming efficiency and related topics.

He is frequently asked to share his expertise on SAS Software topics at the annual SAS Global Forum (formerly SUGI) conference and other SAS user conferences throughout North America, receiving “Best Paper” recognition at many of these events. He has also been an invited speaker at events for SAS users in Canada, New Zealand, the Netherlands, Australia, the People’s Republic of China and the United Kingdom. In 2007 he started the Virtual SAS Users Group (VirtualSUG), an online resource for the SAS user community, and is currently chair of the Sacramento Valley SAS Users Group. Andrew has also given presentations at meetings of the Direct Marketing and American Statistical Associations. He was a keynote speaker at the 2009 Annual Institute on Research and Statistics, an event jointly sponsored by the Sacramento Statistical Association and Sacramento State University.

Andrew earned undergraduate and graduate degrees from The George Washington University. From 1989 to 1995 he taught semester-length courses in the SAS System for UC Berkeley's Extension Division, and has also taught for the University of Auckland, the St. Petersburg University of Economics and Finance in the former Soviet Union and the Department of Experimental Statistics at Louisiana State University. He has also been a guest lecturer in the Department of Decision Sciences at The George Washington University, at the Departments of Statistics at California State University East Bay (formerly CSU Hayward) and at California Polytechnic University San Luis Obispo.
